St Peter's Day Celebrations: 29 June 2003

St Peterstide Service

This service portrayed the faith and discipleship of St Peter; the rock. A central aspect of the service was a narrative of the interaction between Jesus and Peter at various points of Jesus’s life. This exploration took the form of short scenes, which were interspersed through the liturgy and acted by various members of the congregation. Jacqui had prepared various surprises for us throughout the service, for example, Peter mending the nets, the building of a church on a rock (these having been prepared at the workshop on Saturday), the joining of hands together throughout the whole church, building up Jesus’s church, and by the breaking of bread.

Also prepared at the workshop were keys, on which people had written what they wanted to find in heaven, that had been stuck on the church pillars. On entering the church, each member of the congregation had been given a cut out fish shape. At Jacqui’s invitation each person wrote, on their fish, the name of a person and place which they wanted to pray for and these were gathered up in the offertory. The fishes were pinned onto a net to form an alter frontal. As well as carrying our prayers, this represented that we are all Jesus’s fishermen.

A huge thank you to Jacqui and everyone else who helped behind the scenes and during the service, which gave all ages a new insight into Peter’s life and mission

The picnic afterwards...

It was a very pleasant lunchtime especially to see the children dancing round and people enjoying the volley ball game. Groups were chatting in the sunshine, with picnics and live music, organised by Bob Beckford, who told the audience about each piece. The picnic made St Peter’s day extra-special.

Thank you to the social committee for arranging a lovely family event in the cottage garden.
