To mark the ending of the Royal Jubilee Year, the Mothers' Union produced 'A Grand Merrie England Feast'.
On a wet and windy night over fifty guests were welcomed into the hall, which was decorated with banners and long dining tables. Punch was served and, as we found our placecards, we were gratified to see that all had been elevated to the ranks of Baron, Esquire, Lady, Duchess et al.
The residing Lord and Lady of the feast and their retinue took their places and, after grace, a troupe of serving wenches brought in a delicious soup. We enjoyed a refreshing sorbet to musical accompaniment and the main course of poacher's pie and vegetables in generous portions kept everyone busy. Squire Eric diverted us with some amusing songs and a brass ensemble entertained us during the evening.
The wine steward was very attentive and by now the atmosphere was truly merry. Then the serving ladies presented us with gingerbread, lemon drizzle cake and fruit compote, while the whole assembly applauded the two fancy dress wenches.
What a wonderful occasion! We speak for all those who attended this imaginative, entertaining and enjoyable event, and we thank the Mothers' Union - and, especially, we understand Edna Kemp for her overall input.
