‘Don’t forget this evening’ the Bishop of Bradwell told the congregation on Easter Saturday.
It would be difficult to forget this very special service that was full of movement and ritual, joy and celebration. Unlike previous Easter Saturday services, this was to incorporate baptism, confirmation and admittance to Communion for twenty children and adults. This service was to be a milestone in their Christian lives and we were there to share and support this moment with them.
As we walked into the church the beautiful flower displays were a contrast to the plain unadorned church we had seen on Good Friday. The congregation could not sit for long as we were soon outside to watch the bonfire lit and the Paschal candle carried back inside to the font. We re-entered the dark church, but soon had our own candles to light our way.
We witnessed two baptisms and the congregation were then liberally sprinkled with water to remind us of our own baptism. A number of children were admitted to Communion and then others were confirmed.
The candidates took a full part in the service, doing the readings and intercessions and although it was a late night for some of the younger children, there was so much to do and see in the service that they were fully occupied.
It was a very joyful occasion and the members of the congregation who were present came away with memories of a special event in the life of St Peter’s.
