Leckhampton C. E. Primary School News November 2009

The parents of children who will be starting Reception next September are preparing to make their school preferences and a meeting has taken place for parents who are interested in Leckhampton Primary School. If anyone would like to ask about the school, please call the office on 524062.

The Cheltenham Museum schools’ outreach service visited the school with artefacts from the Home Front during the Second World War to show to Year 6 children, who are learning all about life in Britain at that time.

Year 5 children had their Victorian day, when they and their teachers dress in Victorian costume and recreate life in a Victorian classroom, with chalk and slates. They then used their 21st century computers to record their experiences.

Year 4 children walked up Leckhampton Hill to look at the remains of the tramway and Leckhampton’s industrial past and study the environment of the hill as it is today. The walk took place on a lovely Autumn morning and the children, teachers, accompanying parents and Mr Gardner all enjoyed the opportunity to be out in the beautiful countryside on our doorsteps.

Year 3 children have visited the Corinium Museum in Cirencester as part of their topic on the Romans.

The school commemorated Armistice Day, when the children went into the playground at 11.00 for an act of Remembrance and the two minutes’ silence, led by Paul Wilkinson.

The children have been preparing shoeboxes packed with Christmas gifts for children in less fortunate parts of the world, as part of ‘Operation Christmas Child’ The school has collected the amazing total of 250 shoeboxes to be sent to children who would otherwise receive no presents.

The school will be marking ‘Children in Need’ with a non-uniform and ‘mad hair’ day.

The children and staff are already working very hard in preparation for all the Christmas celebrations. As well as all the events in school, the infant choir will be singing at the switching-on of the Christmas lights on the Bath Road on November 26th. The Junior choir will be singing at the Rotary Club carol service at Cheltenham Town Hall on 15th December and the Year 6 choir will be singing at the Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra Christmas concert at Pittville Pump Room on 20th December.

FOLPS have held a very successful Jumble and Big Toy sale, raising over £700 for the school. They have received an extremely generous donation of a very large quantity of brand-new toys, which they will be selling for school funds. They are also busy getting ready for the Christmas Fair, which takes place on Saturday 28th November.
