The school year ended on 19th July, just before the heavy rain and flooding. The Leavers' service was a thoughtful and moving occasion, with prayer and song. Mr. Gardner reflected on some of the 'Values for Life' which had provided the basis for collective worship at school through the year. Some of the Year 6 children talked about ways in which values such as courage, trust and truthfulness had helped them during the year and Mr Gardner talked about ways in which the children will be able to draw on these qualities as they settle into their new schools. Paul Wilkinson recounted the story of Jesus calming the wind and waves of the storm on the lake and emphasised the importance of faith and trust. St. Peter's presented all the Year 6 leavers with a book called 'It's Your Move' which will provide support and guidance for the children as they take the next step in their education.
The Service is also the occasion for presentations to members of staff who are leaving. Flowers and presents were given to Mrs. Houldey and Mrs. Lofting, who are moving to new posts. Mr Webber, who is retiring, was presented with a sat-nav for his car and a splendid guitar-shaped cake. He gave the school a new house-points trophy and a giant chess-set for use outside. Mr. Webber ran the school chess club for many years and introduced many children to the game. The school later gave Mr Webber a tremendous send-off. He performed a lap of honour around the school field in his sports car, which had been decorated for the occasion, and all the children waved and cheered.
We were all greatly saddened by the death in the first week of the holidays of Mrs Bev Roberts, a mid-day supervisor at the school. Mrs Roberts' three children had all been pupils at the school and Mrs Roberts had for many years helped in the classroom and at school events. We will all miss her warmth and enthusiasm very much.
We were also greatly saddened to hear of the death of Derek Brown, who had been a Governor at the school and whose wisdom and kindness were greatly valued.
