Leckhampton C. E. Primary School News October 2010

A special welcome to our new head teacher at Leckhampton C of E Primary School.  Miss Samantha Porter took up her post on September 1st, and everyone associated with the school wishes her a very successful and rewarding career at Leckhampton.

Paul Wilkinson led the first whole-school collective worship of the new term. During the service, the Chair of Governors presented Miss Porter with the keys of the school, symbolising her responsibilities for the care and education of the children, for the staff and for the fabric of the school.

We also welcome into the Leckhampton school family all the children who have joined the Reception classes, the children joining the other year groups and their families.  A meeting has been held for the parents of the Reception children, to introduce them to many aspects of school life. The school has settled down very quickly into the new academic year.

Year 6 children and their parents will have to think very soon about their applications for secondary schools, as the deadline for submitting applications has been brought forward to 31st October. A meeting has already taken place in school to support parents through this process.

We were saddened to hear of the death on 1st September of Sue Tandy. Sue was the School Nurse in the early 1990s and served as an LEA Governor at school from her retirement until 1999. Sue loved the school and enjoyed her time as Governor here.

The School Prayer network has held its first meeting of the year in school.  The annual service will take place at St Peter’s Church on Sunday 10th October at 8.00pm. This is a short service of prayer and reflection and and is followed by refreshments. All are welcome. The ‘Open the Book’ team from St Peter’s have started their programme of presenting Bible stories to some of the children.

Year 5 children have already been on a visit, to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Bristol .

Before the summer holiday, the school garden was entered into the ‘Heart of England in Bloom’ competition for schools. In the first week of this term, Miss Porter, Mrs Harriss and Mrs Wilkinson attended the awards ceremony in Leominster , where, to their surprise and delight, they were presented with a ‘silver-gilt’ award. This is splendid recognition of all the hard work by the children, staff and parents in developing and maintaining the gardens. The judges were very enthusiastic about the children’s knowledge and the many new environmental initiatives at school. This gives us a real challenge for next year!

During the Summer holidays, an important piece of artwork was installed in School. A sculpture of the Devil’s Chimney has been commissioned to mark Mr Gardner’s time at school l. Jonny Anderson, a stonecarver from Stroud created the sculpture from Cotswold stone quarried near Tetbury. Mr Gardner unveiled the sculpture at a reception for Staff, Governors and FOLPS at which Eric Miller, from the Leckhampton Local History Society, spoke about the Devil’s Chimney.
