St Peter’s Christians at Work organised an excellent wine and cheese party
with entertainment on 18th
January. The evening was of course open to everyone at St Peter’s, and the
entertainer and conjurer Tom Elliot, his sister Becky as his
assistant, and twenty eight guests filled the room at Emmanuel Church
very nicely. Emmanuel Church very
kindly let the room to us, as the St Peter’s cottages, are being renovated and
enlarged.
The evening’s format differed
somewhat from before, in that we ate before the entertainment to enable
Tom, a member of the Fellowship of
Christian Magicians, and Cotswold Magic Society’s Stage Magician of the Year -
2009 to set up his equipment.
A very good variety of
breads, biscuits, Duck and Orange Pate, mini Melton pies, Celery,
Peppers, Tomatoes, Grapes, Kettle
Chips, and Crisps were an accompaniment to a
selection of 9 cheeses – 5 English, 2 French, one Irish and one Swiss,
and there was a variety of soft drinks,
plus a Chilean red and a New Zealand white wine. I
don’t think there were any favourites among the cheeses, all of them were well
sampled.
Tom’s repertoire was beyond
price. How do you put a knife
completely through Richard Collins’s jacket without damaging it (Richard was
not wearing it at the time), swallow 3 feet of long thin balloon and turn it
into “sausage dog”, or finish
off by escaping, after being handcuffed, from
what looked like a locked mail bag with a choice of about 80 keys?

With many thanks to Tom and his assistant and to Roy Crompton, and
the others of Christians at
Work co-ordinating group (and their spouses and Sue Marlow) for making the
evening such a success.
