Christians at Work - October 2009

Sarah Powell: Reaching a lost generation.

At the October meeting of Christians at Work, we were pleased to welcome Sarah Powell, who is the lead youth worker employed within the South Cheltenham Churches area.  I imagine Sarah is used to speaking to a much younger group of people than those of us present at the meeting, but we are all children in the eyes of God, which we were reminded of in the prayers lead by Anne Webber.

Much of Sarah’s background was outlined in the October magazine.  She spoke warmly about her childhood and her Christian upbringing and what led her to become a youth worker.

She asked us to discuss in small groups:

·                     What age did you become interested in the Christian faith? Why?

·                     Why should young people be interested in the Christian faith?

·                     What could the church offer young people, who choose not to become Christians?

·                     Why are many young people disinterested?

Also

·                     Did you ever go to a youth club or social club? Why?

·                     How does going to a club based in a church, differ from a club at school?

·                     Why is it good to have lots of volunteers from the churches involved?

These questions raised a good deal of thought and discussion amongst us.

Sarah spoke about her work within local schools in the area and current youth projects.  She feels that a whole generation of people have missed out on the Christian message, yet the vision for the south Cheltenham Churches Youth Project is for every young person in our parishes to have ongoing contact with Christians, and to feel that the Christian message is relevant to their lives and that they know where to go to find out more.

It was a real pleasure having Sarah to speak to us and her enthusiasm for her role as lead youth worker shines through her.  She is hoping to come to talk about her work within a Sunday service in the future, at which time you will be able to learn more about Sarah and the project, but in the meantime please remember Sarah and Tom Elliot, who is our part-time youth worker, and the project in your prayers.
