The next meeting will be on Monday 7 April at 20.00 in the Glebe Cottages* when the speaker will be Michael Kernon on "Chaplaincy in the Fire Service".
Michael started his working life in the Royal Marines. In 1968 after eleven years he left the Marines and joined the Fire Service. During his time as an operational Fireman,Leading Fireman,Sub Officer and Station Officer in Coventry and Portsmouth he went to the full range of incidents in which the Fire Service gets itself involved. He then spent three years as an instructor at Hampshire Fire Brigade Training School before becoming an instructor at the Fire Service College, Moreton in Marsh. After about six years teaching he was appointed as Staff Officer to the Chief Executive of the Fire Service College, a job he held until retirement in 1998. In HM Birthday Honours list that year he was awarded a Queens Fire Services Medal for services to the UK Fire Service.
Michael got involved with the UK Fire Services Memorial Chapel, Moreton right from its inception and still very involved. He is the Verger to the Chapel, and part of the Chaplaincy Team to the Fire Service College. He is also the Chapel co-ordinator for the Firefighters Memorial Trust, and an Honorary Member of the National Association of Fire Service Chaplains.
Michael was baptised and confirmed in the Church of England but became a Roman Catholic when he married.
We very much look forward to hearing of Michael's experiences as a Christian operating in the hazardous and sometimes traumatic role of a firefighter.
ALL warmly welcome as always.
